After these things, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus. ~John 19:38
There are objects that have been revered by pilgrims for centuries, even millennia, and are said to be “authentic.” Still, a logical person might raise an eyebrow in doubt. In the Church of the Holy Sepulchre there’s a “Stone of Anointing” which is said to have received Jesus’ body when it was taken from the cross. Is it likely that this is the actual rock slab where Jesus’ lifeless body lay? I doubt it. Yet as my fingertips touch the cool marble, I am shot through with a tremor that has nothing to do with factual certainty, and everything to do with spiritual certainty. Without intending to do so, I lay my forehead on the rock, adding my tears to its polished surface.
How could you more fully enter Jesus’ story this Lent?
Prayer: O Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
