Life is fragile every day, it’s a fact. But there are some days that bring this fact to our mind.
This afternoon a friend/colleague died of cancer. Cynthia Bolbach was a wise, witty, spiritually profound person. She made the world a better place with her common sense, her vision, and her ability to bring people together. She was a ruling elder (a lay person) and led the Presbyterian Church (USA) as the Moderator of the General Assembly.
I am holding all her loved ones in prayer as they grieve.
A few minutes ago my sister called with other news. Our elderly father had a car accident this afternoon. Someone ran a red light and hit him hard enough to deploy his airbag. They were bystanders who came to his aid. He was treated at the hospital and released. The story ended: “And then we all went to Russ’ for supper.” That makes it a happy story. But I am aware that it might have been otherwise.
Hug the people you love! And let me close this day with the prayer from compline:
Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.
