I heard some great lectures at the Festival of Faith & Writing. Here are a few choice bits from Scott Cairns, poet and essayist, raised-Baptist, now-Orthodox:
“Tell the Calvinists they’re not as bad as they think they are.”
“Writers are people who use their writing to figure things out, not to tell us what they know.”
“I am less and less inclined to see faith as a propositional matter.”
“The way of salvation is not the way of the mercenary or the slave but the lover.”
“The essence of sin is falling away from eternal divine life. Salvation is the return.”
Q: Is Jesus Christ your personal Savior? ?A: No, I like to share him.
I love the one about writing. I think I want to be a writer when I grow up.
