Life is good when you can enjoy the simple things. When life is difficult, or painful, it’s hard to even notice the simple things, much less to take time to make them happen.
So many simple pleasures take a few minutes of attention: clean sheets, homemade scones, a tidy bathroom. I know that I only have the energy/attention for those things when the day’s work has felt productive.
If life feels overwhelming, or if hours have slipped from my grasp, or my emotions are on overload, the simple things disappear, the way the smell of burnt toast destroys a good cup of coffee.
I wonder. Could it be, then, that the Kingdom of God will simply be a state in which everybody enjoys a delicious meal at the end of the day and goes to bed smelling sweet dreams and with a full heart?
Actually, if every single person was well-fed, and loved, that would be good, wouldn’t it? If every person had worthwhile work to do, with energy left over, that would be downright amazing. And if all the laundry were sweet-smelling, yes that would be Kingdom Come.
